May 25, (THEWILL) – Manchester United concluded their English Premier League campaign with a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, condemning the visitors to UEFA Europa League qualification rather than UEFA Champions League football for the 2025/2026 season.
The result provided a positive end to what has been a challenging season for United under manager Ruben Amorim, who watched his team deliver their first league win since March 16.
The match turned decisively in United’s favour during the first half when Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez received a red card for bringing down Rasmus Højlund outside the penalty area.
The incident occurred after defender Matty Cash played a poor back-pass that forced Martínez into a desperate challenge on the United striker.
Playing with 10 men for the majority of the contest severely hampered Villa’s ability to maintain their push for a top-four finish.
Villa appeared to have taken the lead in the second half when Morgan Rogers found the net after dispossessing United goalkeeper Altay Bayındır.
However, referee Thomas Bramall had already blown his whistle for a foul on the keeper before Rogers scored, despite replays suggesting Bayındır did not have proper control of the ball.
VAR could not overturn the decision because the whistle had been blown before the goal was scored.
United capitalised on their numerical advantage when Amad Diallo headed home at the back post to open the scoring.
The goal came at a crucial time for Villa, who needed points to maintain their UCL hopes.
Their task became impossible when Ian Maatsen fouled Diallo inside the penalty area, allowing Christian Eriksen to convert from the spot in what proved to be his final appearance for the club.
The defeat means Villa will compete in the Europa League next season, missing out on UCL qualification despite a strong campaign under Unai Emery.
United’s victory provides some momentum heading into the summer transfer window, though significant improvements will be required if they are to challenge for European competition next season.
