May 21, (THEWILL) – Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior was sent off from the game after an altercation, which erupted in response to alleged racist abuse from spectators during the team’s 1-0 defeat to Valencia on Sunday.
During the second half, the match came to a standstill for a duration of 10 minutes as Vinicius identified individuals in the crowd to the referee, alleging racial slurs directed at him. However, the Brazilian player continued on the pitch, but was subsequently shown a red card after getting involved in a brawl with Valencia players.
In response to the distressing events, Real manager, Carlo Ancelotti, expressed his frustration, saying: “I don’t want to discuss football today; there is no significance in doing so. What we witnessed today is unacceptable. The entire stadium chanting racist insults—I told the referee that he should have halted the match.” Ancelotti further acknowledged Vinicius’s reaction as “understandable” given the circumstances.
The manager emphasised the need for action, stating, “La Liga has a problem here. Vinicius is, in my opinion, the most important player in the world. La Liga must address this issue; these instances of racism necessitate the suspension of matches. When an entire stadium resorts to racist chants against a player, the match must be halted. I would express the same sentiment even if we were leading 3-0; there is no alternative.”
Ancelotti concluded by highlighting Vinicius’s emotional state, stating: “Vinicius is profoundly saddened and angered. Such incidents should not occur in the world we inhabit.”
