May 03, (THEWILL) – Juventus finally secured a much-needed victory, ending their five-game winless run with a 2-1 triumph over Lecce in Serie A.
Dusan Vlahovic’s brilliant volley on the turn secured the three points for Massimiliano Allegri’s side, boosting their chances of qualifying for the UEFA Champions League. Leandro Paredes opened the scoring with an excellent free-kick, but Assan Ceesay equalised with a penalty before Vlahovic’s winner.
Both teams had goals disallowed for offside in a lively first half, with Lecce continuing to test Juventus’ defence after the break. Juve had to withstand an early scare, with Ceesay’s goal ruled out for offside, before Paredes’ stunning free-kick put them ahead. Fabio Miretti thought he had doubled their lead, but VAR intervened to disallow his effort for offside.
A knee injury to Mattia De Sciglio and Danilo’s handball that led to Lecce’s equaliser added to Juve’s woes. However, Vlahovic’s first league goal in almost three months ultimately proved decisive, heaping pressure on Juve’s rivals in the battle for a top-four finish.
The victory moved Juve into second place, ahead of Lazio’s game against Sassuolo later on Wednesday. Next up, Juventus face Atalanta on Sunday, while Lecce take on Hellas Verona on the same day.
