June 19, (THEWILL) – The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), on Monday, announced that its Foundation Board has approved a proposal to extend the initial term limit for the president and vice president from three to six years.
Additionally, a provision for a further and final term of three years, subject to a full election process, has been introduced for these top leadership roles. This decision was made to allow for the initial cooling-off period and the formal election process for these positions, as stated in a news release by WADA.
The current three-year term limit puts pressure on the President and Vice President to begin campaigning for re-election within a relatively short period, potentially hindering their ability to fulfil their mandates effectively. By extending the term to six years, this issue is addressed, providing more time for the leadership to carry out their responsibilities.
These changes aim to align the total term limit of nine years for the president and vice president with the term limits applicable to other members of WADA’s Foundation Board and Executive Committee.
Out of the 38 board members, 33 voted in favour of the proposed revisions, with only one member voting against them. At the time of the stated deadline, four votes had not been received. It is worth noting that WADA President, Witold Banka and Vice President, Yang Yang, were both unanimously re-elected last November for a second and final three-year term in their respective roles.
