June 23, (THEWILL)- The number of Super Eagles players plying their trade in arguably the best football league in the world, the English Premier League, is witnessing an increase ahead of the 2021/2022 football season as newly-promoted side Watford FC add another Nigerian Emmanuel Dennis to their squad.
The 23-year-old recently completed an international transfer to the side of the Super Eagles’ Assistant Captain and defender William Troost-Ekong, as they make a celebrated return to the EPL after playing the previous season in the Championship, England’s second tier division.
The Hornets snapped up Dennis from Belgian champions Club Brugge for an undisclosed fee after the speedy striker spent the 2020/21 season out on loan at FC Cologne where he played nine matches without scoring a single goal in the German top flight.
This did not deter the determination of Watford to get their player having monitored his development and being confident in the player’s potential to excel in the Premiership. In an official statement on their website, the team confirmed the move:
“An agreement with Club Brugge has been reached for the transfer of exciting young forward Emmanuel Dennis, Watford FC is delighted to confirm.
“The 23-year-old Nigerian spent part of last season on loan in Germany’s Bundesliga with 1. FC Koln, having first joined the Belgian top-flight side in the summer of 2017.”
“A scorer of 27 goals in just over 90 club appearances for Brugge, he has featured in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.”
“The Hornets are currently finalising personal terms with the pacy striker – capped twice by Nigeria so far – who began his professional career with some experience as a teenager in the Ukrainian Premier League with Zorya Luhansk.”
The young player becomes the eighth African on the books of Watford so far. He joins fellow Nigerians Troost-Ekong, Isaac Success and Tom Dele-Bashiru (Nigeria), the imperial Senegalese Ismaïla Sarr, Kwadwo Baah from Ghana and Morocco’s duo Adam Masina and Imran Louza.
As referred to in the club’s statement, Dennis has featured in two international matches for Nigeria but is yet to find a debut goal. THEWILL hopes his performance in England with Watford will be a turning point for the young talent and bring him and the club the limelight of his potential promises
