July 05, (THEWILL) – PAOK Thessaloniki FC have officially announced the signing of William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria’s national team, from Watford.
According to a statement on the Greek club’s official website, the defender has agreed to a three-year contract, which will see him remain with PAOK until 2026. Troost-Ekong’s move to PAOK brings an end to his three-year tenure at Watford.
The 29-year-old joined Watford in September 2020 from Udinese and played a crucial role in helping the team secure promotion to the English Premier League in his first season. However, his appearances were limited as Watford struggled in the top flight, resulting in their immediate relegation back to the Championship.
In the first half of the season, the Nigerian defender featured in 15 matches for Watford in the second tier before being loaned to Serie A side Salernitana in January. At Salernitana, Troost-Ekong made nine appearances in the league, scoring one goal against his former club, Udinese, and aiding in the team’s successful fight against relegation.
Despite reported interest from clubs such as Panathinaikos, Genoa, and Verona, PAOK emerged as the club to secure the services of the talented Super Eagles’ defender. PAOK finished fourth in the Greek Super League last season and is set to participate in the Europa Conference League in the upcoming season.
