May 16,(THEWILL) – English Premier League players and managers have come under scrutiny for their conduct towards match officials this season, prompting Howard Webb, the head of referees, to emphasise the need for a more robust approach in tackling the issue.
As THEWILL has reported this season, several EPL managers including Jurgen Klopp of Liverpool, Marco Silva of Fulham and Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton and Hove Albion, have faced touchline bans due to their actions.
Webb called for unity within the sport to foster a more respectful environment, stating: “We need everybody in the game supporting a movement towards a more respectful environment. It’s clear it has not been good enough. Everybody acknowledges we need to be stronger in dealing with behaviours, not at the acceptable level.”
The referee boss highlighted the shared desire among all stakeholders to address the problem, expressing optimism about the growing determination to effect positive change.
“There is a stronger desire now than before for this to happen”, Webb remarked. “We have a great product and a great league, and we don’t need some of the behaviour we have seen to continue.”
The focus of Webb’s call is on the overall preservation of the integrity and reputation of the game while ensuring that players and managers uphold high standards of conduct. However, Webb must also focus on the less than satisfactory officiating errors which denied teams crucial points and for which he was forced to apologise.
