November 07, (THEWILL) – David Moyes’ West Ham continued their impressive form this season as they beat Liverpool 3-2 at the London Stadium to move into third place in the English Premier League.
A ludicrous Alisson own goal, Pablo Fornals, and Kurt Zouma gave the Hammers full credit for their victory.
Liverpool dominated possession for big swaths of the game but were unable to convert it into points, nor were they able to incorporate their most dangerous players – Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Diogo Jota – as West Ham compacted and closed down all open spaces.
The hosts got off to a flying start, seizing the lead after just a few minutes. Under pressure from Angelo Ogbonna and Michail Antonio, Alisson flapped at Fornals’ in-swinging corner, and the Brazilian could only tamely put the ball into his own goal.
The goal was reviewed by VAR, but he was not spared the embarrassment.
Liverpool’s reaction was strong, and they dominated the remainder of the half, although their equaliser came right before the break. After Declan Rice was alleged to have fouled Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold blasted a fantastic free-kick into the top corner.
The Reds, on the other hand, failed to put their foot on the gas after the interval, and were caught out midway through the second half by a West Ham team that looked threatening on the counter.
Jarrod Bowen did an excellent job of burrowing forward with the ball, and Fornals tucked away his exquisite through pass – albeit Alisson may feel he should have prevented it. Zouma scored from another corner minutes later, sending the London Stadium into a frenzy.
Late goal from substitute Divock Origi made the final ten minutes edgy, but West Ham held on when Sadio Mane headed a wonderful late chance beyond.
The Hammers have now drawn level with Man City on points and are only three points behind Chelsea at the top of the table. Their next destination is Wolves.
Meanwhile, Liverpool has dropped to fourth place, and their unbeaten streak of 25 games has come to an end. After the international break, they will seek to get back on track against Arsenal.
