August 10, (THEWILL) – West Ham United have completed the signing of Mexico international, Edson Alvarez, from Dutch club, Ajax, the English Premier League team announced Thursday.
The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has agreed to a contract until June 2028 with the Europa Conference League winners for an undisclosed transfer fee. He will look to strengthen a West Ham midfield now without former captain, Declan Rice, who recently moved to rival London club, Arsenal.
“The midfield area was one we were especially keen to reinforce this summer – and Edson will complement the other options we have in that department,” said West Ham manager, David Moyes, in a statement on the club’s website.
Alvarez began his senior career with Club America in Mexico City. He won two Eredivisie league titles during his four seasons with Ajax in Amsterdam. The 69-time capped Mexico international won the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019 and 2023. He also played for his country at the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup tournaments.
“It’s a hugely sentimental moment for me in my career,” Alvarez said. “To join a club like West Ham is a dream for me and my family.” West Ham, who will play in the UEFA Europa League this season, start their English Premier League campaign on Saturday at AFC Bournemouth with a 3:00 pm kickoff.
