BEVERLY HILLS, April 25, (THEWILL) – Just as when they lost to Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup, it was a game of slim margins when Manchester City confronted Tottenham Hotspur in the final of the EFL Carabao Cup on Sunday. In the tight encounter, there were times when it could have gone either way and a good opportunity put to good use by one side was going to be the differentiating factor. And, that was how it came to be.
Ryan Mason, the young Spurs’ temporary manager was denied an immediate title boost as Pep Guardiola’s City scored late in the second half to defend their title and claim the 2021 Carabao Cup at Wembley Stadium.
The final was used as a pilot event by the authorities for the return of fans to the stands of sports events and activities across the United Kingdom. As a result, there were 8,000 spectators present to watch the final in person, for the first time since a spike in cases and new variants of the coronavirus forced the government to suspend tiered-phases of the staggered return of fans to the stands in December last year.
The game witnessed another typical City domination of the stats throughout the both halves. It had everything but the goals needed to separate the two sides but the chances were there for the taking just that neither side was delivering the final touch to make it count until Aymeric Laporte in the 82nd minute decided the match with his head.
It gives City their fourth consecutive League Cup, meaning they have lifted the trophy in five of the last six seasons. With this eighth trophy at the league level, they have equalled Liverpool’s Cup record in number of trophies won and winning it four times in a row also matches up with Liverpool, who did the same between 1981 and 1984.
The quick recovery from injury of Belgian playmaker, Kevin De Bruyne, was instrumental to the victory. He gave City solidity and distribution advantage in the centre of the park and was on hand to deliver the free kick that allowed Laporte head home the winner.
However, as City progressed to the final, the matches became a more cagey affair and, expectedly, the goals dried up. City edged past Championship side Bournemouth in the fourth round, winning 2-1 with mostly team B players, which offered Liam Delap the chance of a debut City goal.
The men from the Etihad then breezed past Burnley 3-0 in the fifth round and, with more regular squad players, dispatched Arsenal 4-1 in the quarter-finals. This set the stage properly to hand city rivals Manchester United a January exit with a 2-0 semi-final victory.
Spurs allowed only one goal in in the final but that was all City needed to seal their first of three possible silverware chances this season. The only question at this point that requires clarification relates to how the places for European competitions will play out given that City will surely finish in the top five.
This victory implies that the Premier League’s space in next season’s Europa Conference League play-offs will now go to the team that ends the season sixth or seventh. Again, this will still depend on the result of next month’s FA Cup final between Chelsea and Leicester City.
The possibility exists that whichever of the FA Cup finalists, Chelsea or Leicester, wins the FA Cup, they will finish in the top five of the EPL League standings as well, as they are presently third and fourth on the table. If that does not change, then the remaining Europa League place will fall to the team that finishes sixth with the Europa Conference League spot going to the seventh-place team.
However, if it happens that either team wins the FA Cup but finishes seventh or lower, that place in the inaugural Europa Conference League will go to the sixth-place team on the table. But, if Chelsea or Leicester wins the FA Cup and finish sixth, then the seventh-place side in the Premier League will get the Europa Conference League place.
A win for Tottenham at Wembley, would have secured them European football for next season regardless of where they finished outside the top five, which is going to be a difficult shot for them now as things stand. They are seventh and a point ahead of Everton who have a game in hand. Their wait for a trophy since 2008 will go on for another year as the changes they seek begin within the squad.
