March 29, (THEWILL) – Priyanka Chopra has opened up on why she left the Indian film Industry, Bollywood to pursue a career in the US.
Speaking on the latest episode of Dax Shepard’s podcast, ‘Armchair Expert’, the actress revealed she had beef with people in the Indian film industry where she made her name.
“I was being pushed into a corner in the industry.
“I had people not casting me, I had beef with people, I am not good at playing that kind of game, so I was kind of tired of the politics and I said I needed a break,” she said.
She also added that colourism was normalised in Bollywood. She revealed that she was considered dusky and was lightened up in many movies.
“I remembered when I joined movies, I was considered dusky, written as the dusky actress and I was like, ‘what is dusky? What does it mean?
“I was lightened up in many movies, through makeup and then blasting lighting.
“There was a song which I still remember, it is called ‘Chitti Dubh Kudi’, which means a girl who is as white as milk and I ain’t that but I was playing her and I was really lightened up in the movie,” she stated.
Chopra said that people advised her to try out acting roles in the US, but it was her short-lived music career, which she recently described as lasting two seconds, that became her gateway to Hollywood.
“This music thing gave me an opportunity to go into another part of the world, not crave for the movies I didn’t want to get but I was able to schmooze certain clubs and cliques of people with it,” she added.
