May 06, (THEWILL) – Wigan Athletic, a second-tier Championship club, have encountered yet another setback as they failed to fulfil their salary obligations for the fifth time this season, according to an announcement made on Saturday.
The English Football League (EFL) penalised Wigan with a three-point deduction in March due to their failure to make timely salary payments. In addition, the club faced charges in June, July, and October for delayed remunerations.
In a statement, Wigan addressed the salary issue, stating: “Staff wages were disbursed on Friday, with the Chairman, Mr. Talal Al Hammad, opting to compensate as many employees as possible within the organisation using the available resources.”
The club assured that the remaining staff, both playing and non-playing, would receive their dues shortly after the Bank Holiday weekend. Acknowledging the challenging circumstances, the club granted the first-team players a day off from training on Saturday.
Once a prominent presence in the Premier League, Wigan Athletic spent a noteworthy eight seasons in the top flight before experiencing relegation in 2013. That same year, they celebrated a remarkable triumph by clinching the FA Cup.
However, their current situation tells a different story. Currently residing at the bottom of the Championship table, Wigan is destined for relegation at the conclusion of the season. Their final match is scheduled against Rotherham on Monday.
