August 24, (THEWILL) – In a 100 metres hurdles upset, Danielle Williams of Jamaica, won the gold medal in the women’s event at the World Athletics Championships on Thursday.
Williams, the 2015 world champion, edged out Olympic champion, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico with a time of 12.43 seconds. Camacho-Quinn took silver in 12.44s, while Kendra Harrison of the United States claimed bronze in 12.46s.
Defending world champion, Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, who set the world record in this event last time, finished a disappointing sixth. 2019 winner, Nia Ali of the United States, came in last.
Going into the race, Amusan was the heavy favourite to defend her championship record, but she and Ali were clearly outrun. Williams executed a clean race and her experience prevailed in holding off the hard-charging Camacho-Quinn at the line.
