September 13, (THEWILL) — Williams has successfully overturned Carlos Sainz’s penalty from the Dutch Grand Prix following a comprehensive appeal process that concluded on Saturday. The Spanish driver’s two penalty points have been removed from his super licence after stewards agreed the original punishment was unjustified, though his 10-second time addition from the Zandvoort race results cannot be altered.
The incident occurred during a safety car period when Sainz attempted to overtake Liam Lawson at Turn 1, resulting in contact that caused punctures for both drivers. Initially blamed for the collision, Sainz served his time penalty during his subsequent pit stop and finished 13th whilst Lawson completed the race in 12th position.
Williams presented crucial new evidence during Friday’s hearings, including 360-degree camera footage from Sainz’s car and rear-facing camera views from Lawson’s vehicle. This previously unavailable footage, downloaded only after the race from on-board memory cards, proved instrumental in the appeal’s success by revealing different circumstances surrounding the collision.
The rear-facing camera from Lawson’s car showed his vehicle moving leftward after the corner apex, with his rear left tyre making contact with Sainz’s front right wheel. Stewards determined this represented a momentary loss of control that caused the collision, contradicting the original ruling that Sainz was at fault for maintaining his outside racing line.
Following their reassessment, stewards concluded neither driver was wholly responsible for the incident, reclassifying it as a racing accident. Williams expressed gratitude for the review whilst acknowledging frustration over the original decision’s impact on their race strategy and overall championship standings.
