July 10, (THEWILL) – Novak Djokovic extended his impressive run in the Wimbledon tournament, as he advanced to the quarter-finals after overcoming Hubert Hurkacz in a rescheduled fourth-round match.
Following the delay caused by Wimbledon’s curfew, Djokovic maintained his composure and sealed a hard-fought 7-6 (6) 7-6 (6) 5-7 6-4 victory over Hurkacz. With this win, the Serbian star equalled Jimmy Connors’ record of reaching 14 grand slam quarter-finals, placing him in second place on the all-time list, only behind Roger Federer, who holds the top spot with 18 quarter-final appearances. Djokovic’s remarkable 32-match winning streak at Wimbledon now ranks him third in the history of the tournament, surpassing Pete Sampras.
Hurkacz, on the other hand, experienced disappointment after failing to convert multiple set points and eventually succumbing to Djokovic’s relentless pressure. Despite impressive serving skills and generating three set points in a tense tie-break, Hurkacz faltered, making crucial unforced errors that allowed Djokovic to snatch the set.
Although the Polish player rebounded in the third set, with a more relaxed and attacking style, Djokovic’s resilience prevailed as he broke Hurkacz’s serve in the fourth set and never looked back.
Djokovic’s next opponent in the quarter-finals will be Andrey Rublev, who secured his place after an intense five-set battle against Alexander Bublik. Rublev’s victory came after a gruelling encounter that lasted over four hours, but he will have the advantage of having had a day off to recover and prepare for the upcoming match against Djokovic.
