David Goffin

June 18, (THEWILL)- An announcement from world number 13 male tennis player, David Goffin, that he will not be able to make it to feature at Wimbledon after suffering an ankle injury this week at the Halle Open makes him the third player to count themselves out of the All-England Club competition in two days.

Goffin was in action against Frenchman Corentin Moutet in Germany when he hurt his right ankle after slipping awkwardly on the grass court and had to retire. The Belgian had hoped to recover in time for England and was getting ready but the circumstances are unfavourable for his competing.

Martin Roux, who serves as an agent for Goffin said: “Yes, David has officially withdrawn from Wimbledon following his ankle injury in Halle. For the moment we do not know more about the exact duration of unavailability.

“He is of course disappointed to miss a Grand Slam tournament, especially since he had recovered well on grass before his injury.

“David told me that it was more serious than a minor sprain, after exams in Belgium. The ankle has not yet deflated (stopped swelling). David realizes that ice and bandages won’t be enough to play.

“The ligaments must be affected in one way or another. The idea is to do new exams at the end of the week in order to then have a healing protocol, especially since after Wimbledon the Olympic Games will arrive quickly. These are now his next goals. “

THEWILL reported on the similar withdrawal of world tennis number twos on the male and female sides, Rafael Nadal and Naomi Osaka, from Wimbledon even as Sally Bolton, the All England Club chief executive confirmed they were in contact with Osaka and other players about this year’s media setup to make it easier to participate.
