June 28, (THEWILL) – In the opening game of Wimbledon 2022, Britain’s Emma Raducanu won her match against Belgian Alison van Uytvanck with ease, to the delight of the home crowd.
On Centre Court, the 10th seed defeated Van Uytvanck 6-4 6-4 with relative ease, thanks to some incredible tennis play that was reminiscent of her victorious run at the US Open last year. She won the vital points she needed to maintain control despite the Belgium’s best efforts.
Although early nerves were expected, the 19-year-old’s triumph was outstanding as she confidently secured her place in the second round in what was her debut on Centre Court, which is remarkable considering the fact that she has already won a Grand Slam.
The partisan crowd undoubtedly appreciated the occasion and cheered her on every step of the way. Raducanu mentioned it in her post-match comments: “I’ve been feeling the love of the home support ever since I stepped onto the practice court on the first day, feeling people behind me going, ‘Emma, you’ve got this!’ and I was like ‘yeah, I got this!’. I’m so happy to play here and stay another day.”
Raducanu’s next opponent will be Caroline Garcia of France, who won her initial round against Yuriko Miyazaki of Great Britain.
