December 05, (THEWILL) – Rising German star, Florian Wirtz, is being pursued by English Premier League heavyweights Manchester City and Liverpool, despite strong interest from Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. The 20-year-old Bayer Leverkusen attacker has bounced back strongly from an ACL injury, notching 3 goals and 5 assists in 13 appearances so far this campaign.
Wirtz’s form has helped propel Leverkusen to the top of the Bundesliga table as they chase a first-ever German top-flight title. Both City and Liverpool are said to be long-term admirers of the young playmaker and remain determined to sign him, despite accepting that any deal is unlikely before 2025.
Wirtz is expected to stay at Leverkusen for at least another two seasons. A future move to Bayern had been seen as the most likely outcome, with Wirtz’s father and agent Hans-Joachim stating that his son was planning to remain with Leverkusen into the 2024/2025 season.
However, City and Liverpool are ready to compete with the Bavarian giants when the time comes for Wirtz’s signature. City notably sent scouts to watch him in action against Hoffenheim last month.
Wirtz has racked up an impressive goal or assist every 96 minutes since returning from injury this season. That form will likely see him play a starring role for Germany when they host Euro 2024 next summer. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is known to be an admirer, but City look best placed financially to secure what would be a huge coup for either club.
