November 15, (THEWILL) — Germany claimed a 2-0 victory over Luxembourg in World Cup qualifying on Friday evening thanks to Nick Woltemade’s double strike. The Newcastle United forward’s two second-half goals at Stade de Luxembourg ensured Julian Nagelsmann’s side finished in the top two of Group A.
The hosts created danger in the opening period despite having lost all four previous competitive fixtures against the Germans. Daniel Sinani and Aiman Dardari both came close with attempts that missed narrowly, whilst Serge Gnabry fired just off target for the visitors.
The deadlock was broken four minutes into the second half when Leroy Sane drove forward on the counter-attack and delivered a cross that Woltemade converted. Dardari wasted a fine chance to level shortly afterwards, dragging his shot wide when well placed.
The contest was settled in the 69th minute through Woltemade’s second of the match. Ridle Baku provided the assist, allowing the striker to finish and double the advantage for Nagelsmann’s team.
Sane struck the crossbar from outside the penalty area late on, but the two-goal margin proved comfortable for Germany to claim all three points on the road.
