September 13, (THEWILL) — Newcastle United claimed their first English Premier League victory of the campaign with a narrow 1-0 triumph over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park. The victory came courtesy of new signing, Nick Woltemade, who marked his debut with the decisive goal after joining from Stuttgart in a £69 million transfer deal following Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool.
The Germany international striker broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, converting Jacob Murphy’s cross with a well-placed header after losing his marker, Emmanuel Agbadou. The second half proved far less eventful, with Wolves unable to register a single shot on target after the break. The visitors were hampered by the absence of striker Jorgen Strand Larsen through injury, leaving them toothless in attack during their pursuit of an equaliser.
The defeat extends Wolves’ miserable start to four consecutive losses, marking the first time in their history they have begun a league campaign without collecting a single point. Newcastle now prepare for their UEFA Champions League opener against Barcelona on Thursday evening.
