December 14, (THEWILL) — Sunderland claimed a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United in Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at the Stadium of Light, courtesy of an extraordinary own-goal from visiting striker Nick Woltemade. The result earned local bragging rights for the hosts in the English Premier League’s first North-East derby in nearly a decade.
The match offered little attacking quality from either side for extended periods. Dan Ballard headed over for Sunderland just before the interval, moments after Newcastle defender Dan Burn departed through injury. The opening 45 minutes failed to produce a goal despite occasional promising moments.
Woltemade inadvertently broke the deadlock just 59 seconds into the second half, heading Nordi Mukiele’s cross beyond goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale via the underside of the crossbar. The final whistle triggered jubilant scenes amongst the home support, celebrating three points in the fiercely contested local rivalry. Sunderland’s defensive resilience complemented their fortunate goal to claim the derby victory.
