December 25, (THEWILL) – The signing of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, as the first transfer move under new manager, Julen Lopetegui, has been officially confirmed by his new club, Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Cunha made an impression while playing for Hertha Berlin and RB Leipzig before joining Atletico in 2021. But, under Diego Simeone, the 23-year-old faded from view after a promising debut season in which he netted six La Liga goals, starting only two league games this season.

He joins a Wolves team that is actually fighting to remain in the English Premier League and, after 15 games, is currently languishing at the bottom of the standings.

Yet, Cunha is upbeat about the move. He said: “I’m really excited to be part of this group and to be part of this club – it’s a big club. I’m excited to play in the Premier League, to play in Wolverhampton, and I think the most important point is that I’m happy like a kid.”

The loan agreement for the Brazilian, which will run until 2027, is open to a permanent option provided certain conditions are met.
