October 2, (THEWILL) – Bruno Lage, the head coach of Wolves, has been fired, as a result of the club’s poor Premier League start.
In June 2021, Lage took over at Molineux, in lieu of Nuno Espirito Santo, after helping Benfica win the Portuguese top division in 2019. Although Wolves were in the running for European qualifying last season under Lage’s initial success, they faltered significantly and finished the 2021/2022 season in 10th place.
Lage has failed to stop the team’s decline this season despite the additions of players like Matheus Nunes, Goncalo Guedes, and Nathan Collins during a busy transfer window, with just six points coming from their first eight Premier League games. They have not won in eight of their away Premier League games after Saturday’s 2-0 loss at West Ham. This is their worst road winless streak since a run of 10 games from August 2011 to January 2012.
Wolves, meanwhile, has scored three goals so far this season, the fewest in the Premier League and the club’s joint-worst performance at this point in a top-flight season. They also scored three in 2003-04 when they were relegated.
Wolves’ next Premier League game is on Saturday against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and interim coaches James Collins and Steve Davis will be in charge.
