December 20, (THEWILL) – Wolverhampton Wanderers have appointed Portuguese manager Vitor Pereira on an 18-month contract, following the departure of Gary O’Neil.
The English Premier League club confirmed the acquisition of the 56-year-old from Saudi Arabian side Al Shabab, where he had been managing since February 2024.
Pereira conducted his initial training session at Compton Park on Thursday, preparing for his first match in charge against Leicester City this weekend.
The former Porto manager brings substantial experience to the role, having previously attracted interest from other English clubs, including discussions with Everton.
The appointment comes at a critical period for Wolves, who currently occupy 19th position in the EPL table.
Their defensive record stands among the most concerning in the division, having conceded 40 goals this season, while internal disciplinary matters have further complicated their situation.
“This is a challenging moment for the club, and we want to thank Vitor for taking on this responsibility,” Wolves chairman Jeff Shi stated in the official announcement.
He added, “We have full confidence in his ability to guide us back on track, alongside the players and staff, and the entire club will be united in supporting him to achieve success.”
Recent weeks have brought additional complications for the club, with Mario Lemina losing his captaincy following an incident involving West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen.
Furthermore, Wolves winger Matheus Cunha faces England Football Association charges stemming from a confrontation with an Ipswich staff member.
