July 28, (THEWILL) – Argentine striker, Romina Nunez, played a pivotal role as her team rallied from a two-goal deficit to earn a hard-fought 2-2 draw against South Africa at the Women’s World Cup on Friday, denying the latter a historic first-ever win at the tournament.
South Africa seemed poised for victory after goals by Linda Motlhalo and Thembi Kgatlana on either side of half-time in Dunedin, in their second group match of the tournament. However, Argentina refused to be discouraged. In the 74th minute, Sophia Braun’s spectacular strike found the back of the net, narrowing the gap.
Just five minutes later, Nunez’s well-timed header levelled the score, igniting hope for Argentina at their fourth World Cup appearance, despite never having secured a win in 11 attempts. The draw gives them a glimmer of optimism as they head into their final Group G match.
Both Argentina and South Africa now have one point each after losing their opening matches in New Zealand. With favourites Sweden and Italy each holding three points before their upcoming clash, the final round of games on August 2 promises to be decisive. All four teams have a chance of making it to the next round of matches, making for an exciting last opportunity to progress from Group G.
