April 08, (THEWILL) – Tiger Woods made a spectacular comeback to competitive golf at Augusta National, shooting a one-under par 71 in his Masters comeback.
As THEWILL previously reported, the 46-year-old hall of famer was seriously injured in a car accident 14 months ago and feared his leg would be amputated. In fact, Woods only confirmed his participation in the Masters on Tuesday, but he looked sharp in his first round on Thursday.
After a four-under 68, Cameron Smith of Australia was the early clubhouse leader. After 69s, England’s Danny Willett, who won the Masters in 2016, and world number one Scottie Scheffler are one shot behind Smith.
Almost half of the 90-man field was still on the course late Sunday, with Northern Ireland’s Rory McIlroy attempting a career Grand Slam for the second time.
After playing his first competitive round in 508 days, Woods remarked, “There is a long way to go, it is a marathon but it is nice to get off to a positive start,”
