July 14, (THEWILL) – Zambia overcame Senegal in a penalty shootout on Wednesday, to advance to the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies 2022 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations In Morocco.
After defeating the West Africans in a close match, the Copper Queens achieved history by earning their first semifinal spot in the continental competition, but even more significant, they clinched their first World Cup ticket.
The match itself, at the Complexe Sportif Mohamed V in Casablanca, required extra time to get a straight out winner, but both sides could not be separated when the extra time finished 1-1. The referee called for decision by penalty shootouts, through which the Southern African prevailed in 4-2.
Nguenar Ndiaye helped the Teranga Lionesses break the deadlock earlier in the game from an unmarked shot inside the box, shortly after the hour mark.
Avell Chitundu’s close-range shot gave the Zambians an equaliser in the 70th minute, but neither team could breach the other side’s defence again throughout the rest of the fixture and all of extra time, forcing a shootout that Zambia won to reach the semis and the World Cup next year in Australia and New Zealand.
