BEVERLY HILLS, May 27, (THEWILL) – The impact of Nigeria’s football heritage abroad was further enhanced on Wednesday when Swiss football outfit, Grasshopper Club Zurich (GCZ), appointed Seyi Olofinjana, a former Nigerian midfielder, as the new Technical Director of the club via a public announcement.
The club is a multisports outfit based in Zurich, Switzerland, and is leading the standings in the Swiss Soccer League. With 27 titles in their collection, GCZ holds the records for winning the most national championships and the most for the Swiss Cups, 19 of which they have won. The club is the oldest football team in Zurich and maintains a substantial rivalry with FC Zurich.
With the announcement, Olofinjana is expected in Zurich in the next few days, to take over from interim sports director Jimmy Berisha, who will now return to the position of Managing Director, which is his proper responsibility at the club.
It will be Olofinjana’s priority, when he resumes as the Technical Director to arrange for the appointment of a new head coach for GCZ. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers star, who left his role as one of the managers in Wolves’ Academy in April 2021, believes he is up to the task.
In his comments about his appointment, Olofinjana expressed his excitement to take the club to the next level. Speaking to the club website, he said: “I’m delighted to be part of a historic club like GC. I hope we can re-establish GC at the top of the Super League together.”
Olofinjana has come a long way from his days playing for Kwara United. THEWILL recalls that his foreign career began with the Norwegian side Brann in 2003 where he played for a season before he moved to the English side Wolves. He spent four productive years at the Molineux, making 213 appearances before leaving to Stoke City.
By his retirement in 2014, Olofinjana had played as a combative midfielder for Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City, and Cardiff City to crown a fulfilling career which the former footballer, who was born in Lagos and who holds a degree in Chemical Engineering will now put to effective use in his Technical Director role in GCZ.
