
November 21, (THEWILL) – Alexander Zverev on Saturday defeated Novak Djokovic 7-6(7-4) 4-6 6-3 in the semi-final of the ATP Tours Finals. .
Djokovic faced up against Zverev, who is trying for his second straight tournament win.
They were competing for a chance to face Daniil Medvedev, the 2020 winner who had defeated Djokovic in the US Open final in September.
Zverev went toe-to-toe with the Serbian world number one, and the first set almost certainly ended in a tie-break as the duo failed to gain an advantage. However, the Russian won the first set 7-4, putting Djokovic on the back foot in the semi-final.
With his back against the wall in the second set, Djokovic knew he needed to win and broke his opponent late in the game to take a 5-4 lead and force a third set.
Zverev broke his opponent to go 3-1 up in the third set, giving him a real chance to reach the final. He held his nerve to go 5-2 up, just a game away, before securing an ultimately comfortable victory. For the first time in a long time, Djokovic was unable to mount a serious comeback.
