April 11, (THEWILL) — A major boost to political mobilisation and cross-cultural unity in Akwa Ibom State emerged on Friday, as non-indigene residents donated a fully completed secretariat complex and operational buses to the Arise with Renewed Hope Initiative, signalling deepening grassroots consolidation ahead of future political engagements.
The event, held at the Non-Indigene Secretariat in Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo, brought together diverse ethnic nationalities from across Nigeria, reinforcing the growing influence of non-indigene communities in the state’s political landscape.
In a move widely interpreted as both symbolic and strategic, the non-indigene bloc was described as a “32nd Local Government Area”, underscoring its rising relevance in Akwa Ibom’s socio-political architecture.
President-General of the initiative, Engr. Uwem Okoko, said the engagement marked a critical phase in expanding the movement’s base, noting that non-indigenes remain indispensable contributors to the state’s economic vitality and social cohesion.
He announced their formal integration into the initiative’s structure across all local government areas already covered, a step aimed at strengthening inclusivity and widening participation. According to him, the effort aligns with broader support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno.
The highlight of the event was the donation of a two-storey secretariat complex with 33 offices by the Coordinator of Non-Indigenes in the state, Amb. Sunday Usikhifo. The facility is expected to serve as an administrative hub for coordinating the activities of the association.
Usikhifo also donated three buses to enhance the group’s operations, formally handing them over to the leadership of the initiative.
In his remarks, he commended the Akwa Ibom State Government for maintaining a peaceful and business-friendly environment, which he said has enabled non-indigenes to thrive and contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.
Earlier, the International Coordinator of the initiative, Sir Udo Kierian Akpan, emphasised the importance of unity across ethnic and cultural lines, describing diversity as a key strength for sustainable development in the state.
The event also featured the inauguration of the Non-Indigene Association Executive Council, led by Amb. Usikhifo, alongside an advisory council comprising prominent figures from various ethnic communities.
Goodwill messages from representatives of Igbo, Yoruba, Hausa, and Niger Delta groups echoed a common theme of unity, peaceful coexistence, and collective political engagement.
Proceedings witnessed the commissioning of the newly donated secretariat and buses, alongside colourful cultural displays that highlighted Nigeria’s rich diversity, further reinforcing the message of inclusion and shared purpose driving the mobilisation effort.
