May 08, (THEWILL) — Legendary 1980s singer, Bonnie Tyler, 74, has been placed in an induced coma following emergency intestinal surgery in Portugal.
The singer, known for hits including “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “Holding Out for a Hero”, was rushed to a hospital in Faro, near her home, on April 30 after experiencing severe abdominal pain.
A spokesperson confirmed the surgery and the decision to induce a coma on May 7.
“Bonnie has been put into an induced coma by her doctors to aid her recovery. We know that you all wish her well and ask for privacy at this difficult time”, the statement said.
Tyler is currently in intensive care in Portugal. Her management has asked fans to respect her privacy while she continues to recover.
Friends, fans, and colleagues have sent their best wishes to Tyler as she recovers.
The Grammy-nominated singer, who was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2023, is celebrating 50 years in music this year.
She had planned a European tour, with shows in Malta, Germany, and the UK, scheduled to start on May 22 and continue through December 2026, though her tour plans may now be affected.
