BEVERLY HILLS, JULY 20, (THEWILL) – Sylvester Ezeani, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Abia State, has been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for failing to explain why he received N20m from a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, during the build-up to the 2015 presidential election.
THEWILL gathered that Ezeani allegedly received N20m, from the sum of N241m which he disbursed for Diezani, while he was the REC in Cross River State during the March 28 presidential and National Assembly elections.
Sources revealed that the REC was interrogated by operatives of the EFCC in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in connection with an alleged N20m electoral scam.
“The REC failed to explain what the N20m was meant for and had thus been detained.
“While serving in Cross River State (before he was redeployed to Abia state), he was alleged to have collected the sum of N20m out of the entire N241,000,000, which was released to Cross River State by Diezani.
“He is still in custody,” the source revealed.
