February 20, (THEWILL) — Eric Dane, best known for his roles as Dr. Mark Sloan on ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and Cal Jacobs on HBO’s ‘Euphoria’, has died at the age of 53.
His family confirmed that he died on Thursday, February 19, 2026, after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
“With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS,” his family said in a statement.
“He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”
“He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received.”
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, is a rare degenerative condition that causes progressive paralysis of the muscles. It affects the nerve cells in the brain and spine that control muscle movement, causing patients to gradually lose the ability to speak, eat, walk, and breathe independently.
Dane publicly revealed his ALS diagnosis in April 2025. In his final months, he became a passionate advocate for ALS awareness and research, speaking openly about the realities of the disease and working with organizations focused on support and funding.
He first gained widespread fame as Dr. Mark Sloan, nicknamed “Dr. McSteamy,” on the long-running ABC medical drama ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and delivered a memorable performance as Cal Jacobs on ‘Euphoria’.
He appeared in other TV series and films including ‘Charmed’, ‘The Last Ship’, ‘Marley & Me’, and ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’.
Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters.
