SAN FRANCISCO, November 16, (THEWILL) – Cameroon strengthened their leadership of Group F of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, with a 2-0 victory over hosts Mozambique at the Zimpeto National Stadium in Maputo on Monday.
Toni Conceiçao, the Cameroonian coach, gave the clearest indication of his offensive ambitions from the squad sheet, putting Clinton Njie and Kunde Malong in his lineup from the start.
The hosts, playing in front of about 2000 spectators permitted into the stadium to attend, started well. And they had a golden opportunity to take the lead after 22 minutes.
Cameroon defender Jerome Onguene brought down Luis Miquissone in the box and the referee awarded Mozambique a penalty. But Reginaldo Fait missed from the spot. That miss ended up becoming the turning point of the game.
Four minutes later, Cameroon converted their chance to take the lead. Moumi Ngamaleu found Vincent Aboubakar inside the box, and the forward who found the net twice in the previous game controlled the ball calmly and scored past Mozambique goalkeeper Julio Frenque to edge the Indomitable Lions ahead.
In the second period, as Mozambique struggled to find the equalizer, Cameroon doubled their lead with the impressive Ngamaleu providing the assist again. Substitute Tabekou Wambe received an Ngamaleu cross to drill home and make it 2-0 after 73 minutes.
Miquissone threatened for Mozambique in the final 15 minutes, but he found Andre Onana between Cameroon posts hard to beat.
Cameroon tops Group F with 10 points, followed by Mozambique who have four. Cape Verde (3 points) and Rwanda (one) follow in that order and will lock horns on Tuesday.
