March 28, (THEWILL) – South Africa’s national football team, Bafana Bafana, clinched a place in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals with a 2-1 away win over Liberia, on Tuesday.
The victory guarantees Bafana Bafana a top-two finish in Group K, alongside the already-qualified Morocco. Goals from Zakhele Lepasa and Mihlali Mayambela were enough to secure the win for South Africa at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
Liberia, who made most of the attacking play in the opening phase of the game, levelled the match in the 35th minute through William Jebor’s low, long-range shot. However, Bafana Bafana responded quickly and regained the lead in the 53rd minute when goalkeeper Tommy Songo fumbled Percy Tau’s low ball, allowing Mayambela to score from the rebound.
Despite some desperate defending in the dying minutes, South Africa held on to claim a vital win. The qualification campaign for Group K will feature just two more matches: South Africa will host Morocco in June, while Liberia will visit the North African side in September.
South Africa will be hoping to build on their impressive victory and make a strong showing at the AFCON finals in 2024. Meanwhile, Liberia will look to regroup and prepare for their remaining fixtures in the group stage.
