March 28, (THEWILL) – Equatorial Guinea emerged victorious in a 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Botswana on Tuesday, clinching a 3-2 win at Obed Itani Chilume Stadium.
The Equatorial Guinean captain, Emilio Nsue, was the first to score, finding the net just 13 minutes into the game. However, Botswana responded with a goal of their own in the 38th minute through Mbatshi Elias, before Lebogang Ditsele scored an own-goal to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage at half-time.
Coach Juan Micha Obiang’s team continued to exert pressure on Botswana’s defence and Iban Salvador extended their lead to 3-1 after the restart. Kabelo Seakanyeng converted a penalty for the hosts in the 66th minute, but Equatorial Guinea held on to clinch the 3-2 victory.
The National Thunder’s triumph propelled them to the top of Group J standings, leading Tunisia by two points, while Botswana remained in fourth place.
The qualifying campaign will resume in June, with Botswana hosting Libya while Tunisia will be away to Equatorial Guinea, who will hope to build on their latest win and cement their position at the top of the Group J standings.
