May 17, (THEWILL) – Julian Nagelsmann’s agent, Volker Struth, has expressed support for the former Bayern Munich manager’s decision to reject Chelsea’s offer.
After Nagelsmann quickly emerged as a top contender after Graham Potter’s departure, the German manager surprised many by pulling out of negotiations. Thereafter, Chelsea shifted their focus to Mauricio Pochettino and have now reached a comprehensive agreement with the Argentine, who is on the verge of signing his contract with the Blues.
Struth, speaking recently on the debacle, revealed that Chelsea had made contact but emphasised that Nagelsmann’s choice not to join the club was the right one. He stated, “It was the right decision [by Nagelsmann] not to go there. It’s a club in troubled waters at the moment. And their transfer policy, spending a few hundred million euros, has raised expectations that need to be met. There were also some other issues.”
Struth added that Nagelsmann was initially considered Chelsea’s top candidate and believed the move would have materialised if the manager had desired it. This was not the same on Chelsea’s side, as the London club clarified that Nagelsmann was not their sole preferred candidate.
Meanwhile, Nagelsmann has been ruled out of contention for the vacant managerial position at Tottenham, leaving the club still in search of a new boss. Pochettino, on the other hand, has agreed to the terms of a contract with Chelsea and is expected to sign it soon. He is already engaging in discussions regarding potential summer transfer targets.
