February 19, (THEWILL) – Akwa United and Rivers United faced off in a tightly contested match in the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), on Wednesday.
The match, held at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, ended in a 1-1 draw, a result that reflected the ongoing struggles of both teams in the league, with Akwa United currently sitting two places above the bottom of the table.
Rivers United entered the match with optimism, following a strong performance despite a recent narrow loss to Enyimba. Head coach Finidi George had expressed confidence that his team could secure a positive result against Akwa United.
However, the match proved challenging, with both teams displaying moments of skill and determination throughout the game. The first half saw the visitors open the scoring early via a 9th-minute goal by Paschal Online. Although there were more opportunities, neither side could find the back of the net after that early opener.
The second half brought more intensity and Akwa United responded quickly, equalising just seven minutes after the restart. The match concluded with both teams sharing the points, which leaves Rivers United in third and Akwa United struggling in the relegation zone.
