June 24, (THEWILL) – Carlos Alcaraz has advanced to the Queen’s Club final after defeating Sebastian Korda, securing his spot in the grasscourt tournament last two.
Despite losing an opening set earlier in the week, the 20-year-old Spaniard displayed impressive form against Korda, overpowering him with a 6-3 6-4 victory. Alcaraz, a relative newcomer to grasscourts, will now face Australian player, Alex de Minaur in his first ATP Tour final on grass. De Minaur advanced to the final by defeating Danish second seed, Holger Rune, 6-3 7-6(2).
Korda put up a valiant effort in the opening set against Alcaraz, but succumbed to the Spaniard’s powerful groundstrokes, suffering two service breaks. Alcaraz demonstrated his grasscourt prowess by taking an early lead in the second set and maintaining control throughout the match. If he emerges victorious in the final, he will regain the world number one ranking from Novak Djokovic and secure the top seed position for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament commencing on July 3.
In the other semifinal, 20-year-old Holger Rune’s undefeated streak came to an end as he was knocked out by the dynamic Alex de Minaur, who had already ousted local favourite, Andy Murray, earlier in the tournament. The world number 18 Australian, aiming for his second career grasscourt title after winning at Eastbourne in 2021, proved to be a formidable opponent.
Although Rune showed resilience with both players saving break points, De Minaur’s experience on grass enabled him to clinch victory via a successful tiebreak. In post-match comments, De Minaur expressed his satisfaction with his performance, highlighting his affinity for playing on grass and his hopes for a better outcome in the final.
