SAN FRANCISCO, November 09, (THEWILL) –Â British boxer Tyson Fury has been given the greenlight by the WBC to pursue an undisupted clash against Anthony Joshua. The pair of Brits have apparently agreed to have two fights in 2021, with hopefully all the heavyweight belts on the line.
Joshua holds the World Boxing Organisation (WBO), World Boxing Association (WBA) and International Boxing Federation (IBF) titles, while Fury is the World Boxing Council (WBC) king.
Fury is expected to have a homecoming fight at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Saturday, December 5, but there is as yet no named opponent and it remains unclear if his belt will be on the line.
The following weekend, Joshua will defend his titles against the Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev.
The Battle of Britain for next year will be next, provided both boxers scale through these bouts.
WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman confirmed he was not going to push for Fury to fight their mandatory challenger, which will be the winner of the Dillian Whyte versus Alexander Povetkin rematch.
That bout which was set for November 21, had to be postponed until January after Povetkin was hospitalised with coronavirus.
Earlier, Joshua tweeted: “Fighting for the WBC title would be an honor. It’s a prestigious belt, it’s one that I’m keen on getting my hands on.”
And, touched by the sincerity, Sulaiman replied: “Dear champ, your message is humbling. We are proud of you.
“The WBC was the first organization to rank you. A proud former WBC International champion.
“We welcome you to fight for the ultimate unification for the undisputed heavyweight championship.”
Fury, on the other hand, is still ‘patiently waiting’ to learn his opponent next month as he cranks up his training schedule.
The Gypsy King was initially due to take on Deontay Wilder in third installment of their trilogy but walked away once their rematch clause expired. The 32-year-old insists he is still ready to fight on December 5 and has declared he will take on anybody brave enough to step inside the ring.
Alongside a video of him in training, he tweeted: “Patiently waiting.”
