
February 12, (THEWILL) — American actor James Van Der Beek, best known for his role in ‘Dawson’s Creek’, has died at the age of 48. His family confirmed the news on social media.
Van Der Beek had been diagnosed with colon cancer in 2023 and shared his health battle publicly in 2024.
In a statement posted on Instagram on Wednesday by his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, the family said:
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed away peacefully this morning. He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity, and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now, we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
The series ‘Dawson’s Creek’, which ran from 1998 to 2003, told the story of teenage friends navigating life and relationships. At 20, Van Der Beek played 15-year-old Dawson Leery, a role that made him a household name. He appeared opposite Katie Holmes in the show.
He also appeared in the 1999 film ‘Varsity Blues’ and featured in several other television shows and movies in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Van Der Beek grew up in Cheshire, Connecticut, and began acting at 13 after a football injury kept him away from sports for a year.
He is survived by his wife, Kimberly, and their six children.
