May 13, (THEWILL) – American Hip-hop mogul, Sean “Diddy” Combs, is standing trial on federal charges, including sex trafficking, racketeering, and coercion following explosive allegations of physical and sexual abuse spanning nearly two decades.
The trial commenced on May 12 before a 12-member jury. Prosecutors allege Combs operated a criminal enterprise through his business ventures, forcing women into sexual acts at drug-fuelled parties dubbed “freak-offs” since 2004.
The prosecutors had two witnesses on Monday – A Los Angeles police officer, Israel Florez, who recounted finding Combs’ then-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura, with a black eye at a hotel incident in 2016, alleging Combs attempted bribery.
Another witness, a former manager of male strippers, Daniel Phillip, testified to witnessing Combs physically abuse Ventura and participating in paid sexual encounters with Ventura at Combs’ instruction.
Combs’s family, including his mother, Janice Combs, and his children, were seated in the courtroom’s front row on Monday. During Phillip’s testimony, Combs’s three teenage daughters left the room.
Ventura herself took the stand on Tuesday, giving detailed descriptions of physical and sexual abuse spanning from 2006 to 2018.
She described frequent violent assaults that left her severely injured and how Combs allegedly coerced her into sexual acts with male escorts since age 22. Ventura testified that these encounters often occurred under Combs’ supervision and that he later used the threat of releasing the recordings as leverage against her.
While Combs’ legal team acknowledges past incidents of domestic violence, they strongly deny the trafficking and racketeering charges. The defense attorneys characterize the sexual encounters as consensual “swinger lifestyle” activities between adults.
The case gained national attention after Ventura filed a civil lawsuit in November 2023 alleging years of rape, assault, and abuse. Though Combs quickly settled that case for $30 million, the allegations prompted a federal investigation that led to his arrest in September 2023.
As the trial continues, Combs faces the possibility of life imprisonment if convicted on all charges.
The proceedings, which are not being televised due to federal court rules, are expected to feature additional witness testimony in the coming weeks.
