March 22, (THEWILL) – Canadian Bianca Andreescu defeated Emma Raducanu 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the opening round of the Miami Open on Wednesday.
The two former US Open champions, both born near Toronto, played an exciting match that lasted for two and a half hours on stadium court.
Despite Raducanu’s regrouping and winning the second set, Andreescu’s confidence and power allowed her to secure a victory in the third set. Raducanu had shown signs of improvement by reaching the last 16 at Indian Wells, but was unable to overcome Andreescu in Miami.
Andreescu, ranked 31st in the world, will face a tough challenge in the second round when she takes on seventh seed Maria Sakkari of Greece.
