Argentina-Spain Finalissima 2026

March 15, (THEWILL) — This month’s Finalissima between European champions Spain and Copa America holders Argentina has been called off due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The fixture had been scheduled for March 27 at Lusail Stadium in Qatar, but the regional political situation made staging the match impossible.

Formula One separately confirmed the cancellations of both the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, reflecting the wider impact on sporting events in the area.

UEFA and CONMEBOL worked to find a workable alternative. A proposal to hold the game at Real Madrid’s Estadio Bernabeu with an equal allocation of supporters was put forward, alongside a two-legged format split between Madrid and Buenos Aires on the same terms. Argentina declined both.

UEFA’s statement confirmed that Argentina also rejected a further proposal to identify any neutral European venue for either March 27 or March 30.

Argentina’s counter-suggestion to play after the 2026 World Cup was ruled out due to Spain’s scheduling constraints, and Argentina subsequently declared its only availability to be March 31, a date that proved unworkable for all parties.

The cancelled fixture would have been the fourth edition of the Finalissima and the first since 2022, when Argentina defeated Italy 3-0 at Wembley Stadium.

It would also have been the first meeting between Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal and club legend Lionel Messi.
