June 28, (THEWILL) – Arsenal have made their first major signing of the summer transfer window by bringing in German international, Kai Havertz, from Chelsea.
The English Premier League runners-up successfully fended off competition from Bayern Munich to secure the 24-year-old midfielder in a deal worth a reported £65 million. Arsenal displayed unwavering determination in pursuing Havertz, persisting despite initial rejections from their EPL rivals. Speaking of the move, Havertz said: “It’s super exciting for me to be joining this amazing club and to be part of the Arsenal family.”
He committed to contributing to Arsenal’s rich history and working towards achieving significant milestones, with winning trophies being a key objective. Yet, his departure from Chelsea comes three years after his £62.5m move from Bayer Leverkusen. He still had two years left on his contract, but his eagerness to leave and the club’s need to generate funds in the market led to his departure.
THEWILL recalls that the Blues had a disappointing 2022/2023 season, finishing in 12th place and undergoing no fewer than three managerial changes despite spending approximately £600 million on new signings over two transfer windows. Havertz faced challenges during his time at Chelsea, primarily playing as a striker but managing only nine goals in 47 appearances across all competitions under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel, Graham Potter, and Frank Lampard. The versatile German leaves Chelsea with a record of 32 goals and 15 assists in 139 games, including notable contributions in high-profile finals of the UCL and FIFA Club World Cup.
Havertz’s versatility will undoubtedly benefit Arsenal and manager Mikel Arteta in the upcoming season. The 24-year-old can excel as a No. 10, a striker, or in a wide role, providing valuable options for the Gunners’ attacking strategy. After finishing in second place in the Premier League last season, Arsenal’s highest finish in seven years, the club aims to challenge Manchester City for the title in the upcoming campaign.
