August 14, (THEWILL) – Arsenal have confirmed that new signing Jurrien Timber will undergo further assessment on a knee injury sustained during the club’s 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
The Dutch defender was forced off in the second half of his Arsenal debut after picking up a knock. While the extent of Timber’s injury is still unknown, Arsenal stated that he will see a specialist in the coming days to determine the full severity of the issue. “Jurrien will undergo a further detailed assessment and review with a consultant in the coming days to assess the full extent of the injury in order to determine the next steps,” an Arsenal statement read.
The 22-year-old, who joined Arsenal this summer from Ajax for £40 million, was making his first competitive appearance for the Gunners before being substituted. Manager Mikel Arteta admitted Timber did not look comfortable when he returned to the field early in the second half. “The first action he made a movement and it was a bit funny so we took him straight out,” Arteta said after the match.
Timber’s early injury put a dampener on what was otherwise a winning start for Arsenal, courtesy of goals from Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka. But Arsenal will be sweating on the fitness of their new defender, with the need to continue their winning start in mind.
The Gunners face clashes with Crystal Palace, Fulham, Manchester United and Everton over the next fixtures. Arsenal will hope the assessment provides positive news and that Timber’s injury does not rule him out long-term.
