October 26, (THEWILL) – Celtic were held to a 2-2 draw by 10-man Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night. The Scottish side twice took the lead at Celtic Park but were pegged back by the Spanish giants.
Kyogo Furuhashi opened the scoring for Celtic after just four minutes, exchanging passes with Matt O’Riley before slotting home. Atletico equalised in the 25th minute when Antoine Griezmann scored the rebound after having his initial penalty kick saved. However, Celtic retook the lead shortly after through Luis Palma’s powerful strike.
The second half saw Atletico dominate possession and Alvaro Morata headed them level in the 53rd minute. Celtic struggled to rediscover their attacking spark as the game wore on. Atletico were reduced to 10 men late on when Rodrigo de Paul was shown a second yellow card. However, Celtic could not capitalise and the game finished 2-2.
The draw leaves Celtic bottom of Group E with just one point from their opening 3 games. Atletico sit second on five points. Celtic now face tough away trips to Madrid and Rome as they look to keep their UCL hopes alive.
