November 05, (THEWILL) —Atletico Madrid returned to winning form in the UEFA Champions League with a convincing 3-1 home victory over Union Saint-Gilloise at Riyadh Air Metropolitano. Goals from Julian Alvarez, Conor Gallagher and Marcos Llorente sealed three points for Diego Simeone’s side.
The hosts opened the scoring six minutes before the interval when Giuliano Simeone moved infield from the right and set up Alvarez, who struck a powerful half-volley past Kjell Scherpen. Antoine Griezmann believed he had added a second moments later, only for VAR to rule out his effort for offside.
Gallagher extended the advantage midway through the second half, firing past Scherpen through a packed box. Union Saint-Gilloise responded with 10 minutes remaining when Ross Sykes met Sofiane Boufal’s delivery with a header.
Louis Patris missed a golden chance to level in added time, directing his header directly at Jan Oblak. Atletico capitalised immediately, with Llorente firing home after Scherpen parried Thiago Almada’s initial attempt.
The result moves Atletico back on track in their European campaign following recent setbacks. Simeone’s men controlled proceedings throughout, despite the late scare from the Belgian visitors.
