November 16, (THEWILL) – Taylor Fritz created tennis history at the ATP Finals in Turin, becoming the first American player in 18 years to reach the championship match following an intense victory against Alexander Zverev.
Fritz demonstrated remarkable skill throughout the match, clinching a 6-3 3-6 7-6(3) triumph over the world number two. The contest, lasting two hours and 20 minutes, concluded with Fritz executing a precise forehand winner that sealed his place in Sunday’s final.
The American’s path to victory required exceptional determination, particularly in the decisive set where he successfully defended multiple breakpoints. At 2-2, Fritz recovered from 0-40, and later at 5-5, he maintained his composure to save two additional breakpoints, ultimately prevailing in the tiebreak.
Zverev, who had dominated the group stages and entered the match with eight consecutive victories, found his momentum halted by Fritz’s outstanding performance. The German player’s quest for a third ATP Finals title ended despite a strong second-set comeback that temporarily shifted the match’s direction.
The world number five, Fritz will compete for the trophy against either Italian favourite Jannik Sinner or Norway’s Casper Ruud, aiming to follow in the footsteps of James Blake, the last American finalist at this prestigious tournament in 2006.
