April 05, (THEWILL) – Following a spate of recent issues, tennis administrators, have warned the men’s game that players will face stiffer consequences for on-court misconduct.
The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), released an internal communication to players on Monday, informing them that guidelines are being examined for those who frequently break the regulations.
As THEWILL reported, Alexander Zverev of Germany was kicked out of a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, in February after smashing his racquet against an umpire’s chair. He further exacerbated the misdemeanour, by yelling expletives at the official, claiming that the umpire “f****** destroyed the whole f****** match.”
For his actions, Zverev received a suspended eight-week suspension and a fine of $40,000 (£30,500) for verbal abuse and unsportsmanlike conduct.
Soon after, Australian tennis player, Nick Kyrgios, was fined $60,000 (£45,800) after a series of outbursts in Indian Wells and at the Miami Open.
The Australian’s over-the-top reactions after losing to Jannik Sinner in the fourth round of the Miami Open, earned him a $35,000 (£26,700) fine and he got slammed an extra $25,000 (£19,100) for breaking his racquet and almost hitting a ball boy in the process after losing to Rafael Nadal.
“Effective immediately and as we head into the clay court swing, the ATP officiating team has been directed to take a stricter stance in judging violations of the code of conduct,” ATP chairman Andrea Gaudenzi stated.
“Additionally, we are also undertaking a review of the code, as well as the disciplinary processes, to ensure that it provides appropriate and up-to-date penalties for serious violations and repeat offenders.”
He continued: “We all have a role to play to uphold the reputation and integrity of our sport.”
“The first three months of the season have seen an unusual frequency of high-profile incidents involving unsportsmanlike conduct.
“These incidents shine a bad light on our sport. This conduct affects everyone, and sends the wrong message to our fans, especially young fans.”
